Succulents have made a huge appearance in both indoor and outdoor gardens these past few years.  I bought this large cement pot several summers ago at one of my favorite local garden and gift centers.  I’ve returned year after year to have them pull a few of the oldies and plant a few freshies.  This arrangement lives on my deck all year long and thrives in the warm summer afternoon sun of our northwest facing backyard.

This year I decided to plant it myself.  I picked up a few new succulents to replace some of the tired out brown ones.  Transplanting and rearranging some of the older ones too.  I’m really happy the way it turned out.  Why have I been letting someone else have all the pleasure of putting together one of these beauties all these years?

I’d say it turned out really nicely.  I love the structural nature of succulents and the subtle variety in the greens, some more silver than others.  The texture and structure is incredibly artful.  This arrangement could easily be placed indoors in a brightly lit room.  As with all succulents, just be sure not to water too often.  They like to dry out in between waterings.  In the summer, this outdoor pot gets water about every 10-14 days or so.  But a good rule of thumb is to simply test the soil by poking your finger in it.  If it’s damp, it’s not ready for water.

Take a look at my dear friend Meredith’s arrangements.  She creates the most beautiful succulent wreaths.

Meredith also tried her green thumb at these cool pallets planted with succulents inspired by Pinterest.  First image is what they look like when planted.  The second image is just months later.  Great Job Mere!  You are an inspiration!
