I have always tried to hide my efforts and wished my works to have a light joyousness of springtime which never lets anyone suspect the labors it has cost me. – Henri Matisse
If your kids are like mine and love a good art show, take them to see the Henri Matisse exhibit. If your kids aren’t like mine and don’t think they like going to art museums, take them to see the Henri Matisse exhibit! Sharing art with my children has become one of our favorite ways to see the world together. Take along a sketch book and colored pencils and allow them to spend time with a piece that speaks to them.
The Cut-outs is not only a terrific exhibit with a large showing of some of Matisse’s most famous works, but the cut-outs by nature are childlike in color and shape. It just may make an art lover out of anyone. The curators have done a first-rate job at putting together a show that demonstrates the breadth of the cut-out collection. The exhibit also details the process Henri Matisse experiences as he creates each work. I find this aspect most interesting to children, how they too have a process and can create their own art.
We were fortunate to see the show this summer at the Tate Modern in London, this is the final weekend there, but it will be coming to NYC at The MoMA this October and hopefully heading west in early 2015. Keep an eye out for it, totally worth taking your family voluntarily or reluctantly!
