3 Things About Photos

a bowl full of simple

I wrote about my gift to my family in December.  I made a photo book of our year together.  It took me most of a weekend to do it, but we love it!  I’ve decided to start doing more of these instead of printing photos and putting them into albums.  I’m trying to cut down on the space that photos take up in my home while also trying to cut down on the guilt I feel when they are stuck on my hard drive for years. I want to be able to enjoy them and so do my kids!  I’ve been researching brands along the way.  My next book is going to be done with Blurb.  I’ve heard great things about them and they are having 15% off when you order your book by Feb. 14!

When putting this record of our life together, I realized three things:

1.  I am not pictured nearly enough in photos with my kids or hubbie.

2.  We do not have many photos of all of us 5 together.

3.  I don’t have a lot of photos of everyday moments, which frankly are more precious to me than the big moments.  That’s where the beauty of our lives exists.  Reading books together, bedtime kisses, riding bikes, talking walks, all the moments that make us, us.

For 2013, along with my exciting new camera, I’m committing to taking more of these types of photos to document our life together and to keep momma in the picture!

A friend of mine, that is also a great photographer in the Bay Area, Suzanne O’Brien, posted a link on Facebook recently of a video of her’s that was shared by another blog.  I immediately LOVED it from the very first note.  It’s a short video that I think you will enjoy.  I knew I had to share it here with you because it is that good and because Suzanne is lovely too!  It captures the core of  A Bowl Full of Simple in that simple things are really the best.  I know you will enjoy it as much as I do!

Here’s what she has to say about it followed by the video.  {If the video doesn’t appear below, refresh your browser.}

Thanks so much for asking to share my little video!  I made this shortly after wrapping up a year-long “Photo a Day” project in 2011.  It was a brainstorm I had flying back from visiting my family in the Midwest for the holidays (love me some uninterrupted thinking time on an airplane!).  I was…

–  making project lists for the new year, but seeking closure on the one just finished
–  thinking about about all of the images + words I had captured and tucked safely away in two large albums (thank you Becky Higgins + Project Life)
–  wanting to make something more “lightweight” that told a little of the story of our year
–  creating a reminder for myself about the value of documenting the everyday

I do hope you enjoy!

Thank you for sharing with us Suzanne!  You can find out more about Suzanne on her website  at Suzanne O’brien Studios.

Here’s to keeping mom in the picture + committing to my photo a day challenge!  Who’s with me??

Very nice. The one thing I would add is that as you’re taking photos throughout the year, be sure to pull out the photos you know for sure that you’ll want to use and copy them into a special folder. It will make it a whole lot easier to put your book and your movie together at the end of the year because the photos will be at the ready. (And even now with your new camera, develop a cataloging/tagging system that makes sense for you…although you’re the master organizer so who am I to tell you this!)

That’s a great tip to put the favorites in a folder as you go! Maybe it’ll only take me half a weekend this year! thanks T!
